It is associated with hirsutism, acne, sparse or infrequent menstruation (oligomenorrhoea), metrorrhagia, absent or infrequent ovulation, infertility, endometrial hyperplasia, hyperlipidaemia, hyperglycaemia, and hypertension; all these conditions may be the result of mutations in specific genes.
