Entamoeba histolytica
The agent of amebic dysentery, a disorder with inflammation of the intestine and ulceration of the colon. Entamoeba histolytica is a single-celled parasite that is transmitted to humans via contaminated water and food. It can also infect the liver and other organs.

the only species of Entamoeba that causes human amebiasis; it is transmitted through ingestion of cysts in contaminated food and water. Trophozoites may invade the tissue of the large intestine and may be spread to extraintestinal sites such as the liver, spleen, brain, lungs, and pericardium.
