Nell f
English: short form of ELEANOR (SEE Eleanor), ELLEN (SEE Ellen), and HELEN (SEE Helen); of medieval origin, but now also established as a given name in its own right. For an explanation of the initial N-, cf. NED (SEE Ned). It was the name by which Charles II's mistress Eleanor Gwyn (1650–87) was universally known to her contemporaries, and at about that time it also became established as an independent name.
Cognate: Irish Gaelic: Neile.
Pet forms: English: Nellie, Nelly.
