Kenneth m
Scottish and English: Anglicized form of two different Gaelic names, Cinaed and Cainnech. The former seems to have been originally a personal name meaning ‘born of fire’, the latter a byname meaning ‘handsome, fair one’. Cinaed was the Gaelic name of Kenneth Mac Alpin, first king of the Picts and Scots; Cainnech survives today in Scotland as the common Gaelic name Coinneach. In the 20th century Kenneth has enjoyed great popularity well beyond the boundaries of Scotland.
Derivatives: Scandinavian: Kennet, Kent.
