German: from an old Germanic personal name composed of the elements ēra honour, respect + win friend. During the Middle Ages it was most common in the Rhine region and was borne, for example, by the founder of Strasburg cathedral. In modern times it has been borne most notably by the Second World War field marshal Erwin Rommel (1891–1944). In the United States it is sometimes used as a variant of IRWIN (SEE Irwin) and IRVING (SEE Irving).
