Mons Porphyrites
   Roman name for the site of the Roman porphyry quarry and associated settlement in the mountains of the Eastern Desert 30 kilometers from the Red Sea coast. The site was discovered around 18 AD by Caius Cominius Leugas and was worked throughout the Roman Period. Archaeological investigations of the area were conducted by a British expedition from 1994–1998.
