Mons Claudianus
   Roman name for the site of the Roman granodiorite quarry and associated settlement in the Eastern Desert 500 kilometers south of Cairo in the mountains bordering the Red Sea. The area was in use from the time of Trajan (98–117 AD). The surviving remains include a fortress with administrative buildings, animal lines, and a templeof Sarapis. The site was excavated by a joint British–French expedition from 1987–1993, which recovered among other objects 9,000 ostraca.
