   Site in Nubia at the Second Cataract. The Egyptians had penetrated this far south during the Old Kingdom, where remains of copper-smelting production have been found. Amajor fort was constructed in the Middle Kingdom as part of the Egyptian garrison. The site and its vicinity were excavated by a British expedition from the Egypt Exploration Societyfrom 1960–1965 before the area was flooded by Nasser Lake, the lake formed behind the Aswan High Dam.
