(1895–1960) a US writer of songs. He wrote the words for many famous ↑Broadway musical plays, most of which were also made into films. With Richard Rodgers as his partner, his shows included ↑Oklahoma! and ↑Sound of Music. Earlier successes included The Desert Song (1926) with Sigmund Romberg, Show Boat (1927) with Jerome Kern and Carmen Jones (1943).
