(1758–1831) the fifth US ↑President. He is best remembered for the ↑Monroe Doctrine, which aimed to keep new European interests out of the Americas. He fought in the ↑American Revolution and helped to establish the Democratic Republican Party. He was elected as a US Senator (1790–94) and twice as ↑governor of ↑Virginia (1799–1802 and 1811). His time as President was called the ‘Era of Good Feeling’. He bought ↑Florida from Spain in 1819, settled a dispute with Britain over the US–Canadian border, and signed the ↑Missouri Compromise.
