(1751–1836) the fourth US ↑President (1809–17) and one of America’s Founding Fathers. He was called the ↑Father of the Constitution because of his important work on that document. He was ↑Secretary of State (1801–8) under President Thomas Jefferson and was then elected President as a Democratic-Republican. He was in office during the ↑War of 1812 and when the British burned the ↑White House in 1814. He later helped to establish the University of Virginia and was the last of the Founding Fathers to die.
