Mexican general who tried to crush the Texas revolt and who lost battles to Winfield Scott and Zachary Taylor in the Mexican War (1795-1876)

Antonio López de Santa Anna [Antonio Lpez de Santa Anna]

(1794–1876) the Mexican army officer who in 1836 led the attack on the ↑Alamo. Texas became independent of Mexico when his forces were defeated at the Battle of San Jacinto in the same year. General Santa Anna later became Mexico’s president and lost the ↑Mexican War in 1848.
