(c. 1550– c. 1611) an English ↑explorer who, when he was looking for the ↑North-west Passage in 1609–10, discovered what are now called the ↑Hudson River and Hudson Bay, a very large sea in north-eastern Canada connected with the North Atlantic by the Hudson Strait. In 1611 some of his men turned against him there, and put him in a small boat with his 12-year old son. They were never seen again.
