(1904–91) an English writer of novels. He became a ↑Roman Catholic in 1926, and many of his books, such as ↑Power and the Glory, have strong moral or religious themes. He travelled to many different parts of the world and many of his books are set in tropical countries. He divided his books into ‘entertainments’, such as Our Man in Havana (1958), and more serious novels, such as The Heart of the Matter (1948) and The Quiet American (1955). Greene also wrote plays, travel books, essays and ↑scripts for films, such as ↑Third Man.
