City in SE Massachusetts, a county seat (with New Bedford) of Bristol County, on Mount Hope Bay, at the mouth of the Taunton River, ab. 45 mi. SW of Boston: manufactures of cotton textiles, plastics, and rubber. It is often called New England's "Little Portugal". The Portugese make up more than half the population. The Portugese - American section crowds around the Braga Bridge, named for a sailor of Portugese descent who died at Pearl Harbor.
