Nordenflycht, Hedvig Charlotta
(1718-1762)
A Swedish poet, Nordenflycht is the most significant Enlightenment woman writer in Sweden. Born into a noble family and widowed in her early 20s, she lived on the island of Lidingo near Stockholm. In addition to writing occasional poetry and lyric expressions of her own situation in life, she advocated for improved education of women in her Qvinligt Tankespel af en Herdinna i Norden (1744; Womanly Thought Play by a Shepherdess in the North). She was also a central figure in the group Tankebyggarorden (The Order of Thought Builders), which worked to promote Swedish literary and intellectual life.
