The most common administrative division among Russia’s federal subjects, oblast’ is generally translated as “region” or “area.” Unlike the ethnic republics, oblasts are not associated with titular ethnic groups; however, they differ little from krais, which are virtually the same in administrative terms. Oblasts are subdivided into raions.
