Gozzoli, Benozzo
(1420-1497)
Florentine painter, trained by Fra Angelico. His major work, the Journey of the Magi, executed about 1460 for Piero de'Medici, demonstrates full mastery of the sophisticated perspective of mature Quattrocento art, but the bright colors, multiplicity of human figures, and elegant courtly mood suggest the influence of the last great representative of the International Gothic painting in Italy, Gentile da Fabriano. The Journey of the Magi depicts a splendid aristocratic procession in which the artist portrayed not only his patron Piero but also Piero's father Cosimo and his sons Giuliano and Lorenzo; other figures from the Medici circle include Gozzoli himself, Fra Angelico, Pico della Mirandola, and Angelo Poliziano.
