integration, segregation
These words, despite being antonyms, are sometimes confused. Integration means "combining"; segregation means "separating." An integrated school is one in which students are drawn from various ethnic groups, races, and religions. A segregated school is one from which one or more racial, religious, or ethnic groups is separated, set apart, withdrawn. In an integrated prison, all inmates are housed together; in a segregated prison, hardened criminals might be placed in separate quarters.
