trigger
As a verb, trigger was originally applied to the pressing of the trigger of a gun but now is widely used to mean initiating or setting off something, such as a fight, a celebration, or an argument. Trigger is a respectable word as both verb and noun, but it is widely and tiresomely overused. Why not occasionally use start, cause, produce, or signal?
