1. used to introduce an explanation of or justification for what is stated in the immediate context; occas. adds the additional implication that the person, thing etc in question is not of very good quality:
- after all.
     ♦ [Зилов:] Напрасно ты не доверяешь технике. Ей как-никак принадлежит будущее (Вампилов 5). [Z.:] You're wrong to mistrust machinery. After all, the future belongs to it (5a).
2. regardless of the circumstances, regardless of how things turn out:
- no matter what (happens).
     ♦ Мы поняли, что как-никак, а неприятного разговора с отцом не избежать. We understood that, no matter what, there was no avoiding an unpleasant conversation with Father.
