Term introduced by C. L. Stevenson (1908–79) for a definition that employs a word with a favourable or unfavourable tone, and then proposes that we bestow the attitude on just some particular quality. A proposal to define justice, or democracy, or science or intelligence in such-and-such a way may appear to be a neutral, analytic proposal, whilst in fact being an invitation to privilege some particular arrangements or qualities.
