double truth
The notion, formally condemned several times in the 13th century, that something may be false philosophically yet true theologically. The doctrine would have been an attempt to reconcile Aristotelian metaphysics with revealed religion, but it is not clear that any major figure adopted it. Averroës, whose followers were charged with the view, held that there was but one truth, although many modes of access to it.
