Watsuji Tetsuro
(1889–1960)
Japanese playwright, cultural historian, and moral philosopher. Tetsuro's main philosophical writing is the Ningengaku toshite no rinrigaku (‘Ethics as Anthropology’), written in the years after 1931. Heavily influenced by Confucian and Buddhist elements, and in contrast with the individualistic ethics of the West, he espoused a communal and social view of correct living whereby the individual is absorbed in the larger whole.
