Masham, Damaris
(1658–1708)
The daughter of Cudworth, and close friend of Locke, who lived with her and her husband in the last period of his life, from 1691 to 1704, at their house Oates in Essex. She was an early protagonist of women's education, corresponded with Leibniz, and wrote A Discourse Concerning the Love of God (1696), and Occasional Thoughts in Reference to a Christian Life (1694), an appeal to women to study intelligently the grounds of their religious belief.
