Christian sect owing allegiance to the doctrines of the Dutch theologian Cornelius Otto Jansen (1585–1638). The principal tenet is that without the operation of divine grace, obedience to God's commands is impossible. Grace itself is irresistible when offered, so the upshot is a theological determinism. Jansenism was condemned as heretical by Pope Innocent X. It is important in the history of philosophy because of the Port-Royal logic, and the influence of the Jansenist leader Arnauld.
