French archaeologist. From 1933 to 1974 he directed the French excavations of Mari, uncovering the vast royal palace with its important archives. He was chief curator of the French National Museums and director of the Louvre. He wrote mainly about Mesopotamian artand archaeology (Archeologie mesopotamienne: Les etapes, 1946; Archeologie mesopotamienne: technique et problemes, 1953; Sumer; Assur [translated by Stuart Gilbert and James Emmons], 1960; The Arts of Assyria [translated by Stuart Gilbert and James Emmons], 1961; Mari, capitale fabulouse, 1974).
