Verge
The verge was that area which stretched for 12 miles around wherever it was the itinerant royal household happened to be; because the household was always on the move, the boundaries of the verge were constantly moving. The marshal of the household was in charge of discipline of the royal staff; further, he had the right to try all crimes which occurred within this area. -
