First minted in 1344, under Edward III, this was an English gold coin initially worth one third of a pound, 6s 8d, or half a *mark; it was replaced by the *angel in 1464, when it was worth 10s and known as a *'ryal' or 'rose noble'. Edward III rejoiced in an extra title, King of the Sea, after his successes with naval battles; as a reflection of this, the noble showed Edward holding sword and shield in the *cog, Thomas, in which he had sailed and won the Battle of Sluys, June 1340.
