Title of the king's outer marshal, known also as the *earl marshal. His first duties were the dispositions of the king's army on the field before battle. (It is from this the title 'field-marshal' is derived.) In times of peace, his responsibility was to select where to halt - castle, monastery etc. -during the king's endless *itinerary. He would also ensure all known malefactors in the virgata regis, i.e. district, or *verge were under lock and key during the king's stay. [< Lat. forinsecus = on the outside] -
