Young men, young soldiers. The Latin word on the *Bayeux Tapestry = pueri. At one point Odo, bishop of Bayeux, is shown encouraging them. The word was also used, somewhat later, for the young fighters who hired themselves out as champions in civil duels. As their name suggests, they were young, beginners, tiros; certainly they were unknighted. When hired they would have had servants with them, adding to the costs of their employer. [< Lat. tiro = a young soldier, a beginner, a young recruit] -
