1) The day on which an anniversary of religious importance is celebrated; also, a village festival occurring on the feast day of the patron saint of that village's church. [< Lat. festa = festival, festive holiday]
2) A large festive meal for a grand occasion. One such was on the marriage of Margaret, daughter of King Henry III to Alexander III of Scotland in 1252. Then 1,000 knights attended dressed in silk, while some 60 oxen were eaten.
