Intermediate in the oxidation of fatty acid s and in the formation of ketone bodies; also formed from two molecules of acetyl-CoA; major role is condensation with acetyl-CoA to form the important β-hydroxy-β-methylglutaryl-CoA. SYN: acetoacetyl-coenzyme A.
