Basal metabolic rate

A measure of the rate of metabolism. For example, someone with an overly active thyroid will have an elevated basal metabolic rate.

an expression of the rate at which oxygen is utilized by the body cells, or the calculated equivalent heat production by the body, in a fasting subject at complete rest. Abbreviated BMR. See also basal metabolism, under metabolism.
