nephrotic syndrome
nephrotic syndrome n an abnormal condition that is marked by deficiency of albumin in the blood and its excretion in the urine due to altered permeability of the glomerular basement membranes (as by a toxic chemical agent)

a condition in which there is great loss of protein in the urine, reduced levels of albumin in the blood, and generalized swelling of the tissues due to oedema. It can be caused by a variety of disorders, most usually glomerulonephritis. Treatment is with corticosteroids.

general name for any of a large group of diseases involving defective renal glomeruli, characterized by massive proteinuria and lipiduria with varying degrees of edema, hypoalbuminemia, and hyperlipidemia. See also glomerulonephropathy.
