As·co·my·co·ti·na (as″ko-mi″ko-tiґnə) [Gr. askos bag + mykēs fungus] the sac fungi, a subphylum of perfect fungi variously grouped under either Dikaryomycota or Eumycota, characterized by the formation of an ascus in which sexual spores (ascospores) are produced; it includes the yeasts, mildews, and cheese, jelly, and fruit molds. Some authorities consider this group a class and call it Ascomycetes, whereas others consider it a separate phylum and call it Ascomycota. A number of different classifications of fungi within this group have been proposed.Medical dictionary. 2011.
