enlargement of the spleen. It most commonly occurs in malaria, schistosomiasis, and other disorders caused by parasites; in infections; in blood disorders, including some forms of anaemia and lack of platelets (thrombocytopenia); in leukaemia; and in Hodgkin's disease. See also hypersplenism.
