Artificial insemination
A procedure in which a fine catheter (tube) is inserted through the cervix (the natural opening of the uterus) into the uterus (the womb) to deposit a sperm sample directly into the uterus. The purpose of this relatively simple procedure is to achieve fertilization and pregnancy. Artificial insemination is also called intrauterine insemination (IUI).

instrumental introduction of semen into the vagina in order that a woman may conceive. Insemination is timed to coincide with the day on which the woman is expected to ovulate (see menstrual cycle). The semen specimen may be provided by the husband (AIH - artificial insemination husband), for example in cases of impotence, or by an anonymous donor (DI - donor insemination), usually in cases where the husband is sterile.
