Onychomycosis
Fungal infection of the nails. Fungal infections can involve either the toenails or the fingernails. Nail fungal infection is usually caused by the dermatophyte fungi Trichophyton rubrum which can invade the nail bed. See dermatophytic onychomycosis.

on·y·cho·my·co·sis (on″ĭ-ko-mi-koґsis) fungal infection of the toenails or fingernails. It usually is seen first as white patches or pits on the surface or around the edges of the nails, followed by infection beneath the nail plate. Called also dermatophytic o., tinea unguium, and ringworm of the nail.
