po·lio·vi·rus (poґle-o-vi″rəs) [poliomyelitis + virus] a species of viruses of the genus Enterovirus that cause poliomyelitis. It is separable into three serotypes, designated types 1, 2, and 3. Historically, type 1 has been responsible for about 85 per cent of all paralytic poliomyelitis and for most epidemics, type 3 for about 10 per cent of paralytic poliomyelitis and for occasional epidemics, and type 2 for about 5 per cent of paralytic poliomyelitis.
