paracoccidioidomycosis
A chronic mycosis characterized by primary pulmonary lesions with dissemination to many visceral organs, conspicuous ulcerative granulomas of the buccal and nasal mucosa with extensions to the skin, and generalized lymphangitis; caused by Paracoccidioides brasiliensis. SYN: Almeida disease, Lutz-Splendore-Almeida disease, paracoccidioidal granuloma, South American blastomycosis.

para·coc·cid·i·oi·do·my·co·sis (par″ə-kok-sid″e-oi″do-mi-koґsis) fungal infection by Paracoccidioides brasiliensis. The usual form is a chronic condition in adults that begins in the lungs and spreads to the mucocutaneous areas, particularly the buccal mucosa, and may extend to the adjacent skin, tonsils, gastrointestinal lymphatics, liver, and spleen. A less common form is seen in children and is an acute condition with prominent involvement of the reticuloendothelial system that can be fatal. Called also Almeida or Lutz-Splendore-Almeida disease, Brazilian or South American blastomycosis, and paracoccidioidal granuloma.
