a prostaglandin drug administered by mouth in the prevention and treatment of peptic ulcer, especially when caused by nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (see NSAID), in which case it is given in conjunction with the NSAID. Possible side-effects include nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, and abdominal pain. Trade names: Cytotec, Napratec.

mi·so·pro·stol (mi-so-prosґtol) a synthetic prostaglandin E1> analogue administered orally to prevent gastric ulcer associated with long-term therapy with nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs. It is also used orally in combination with mifepristone to terminate pregnancy, acting to soften and ripen the cervix and induce uterine contractions.
