(yoong) Carl Gustav, 1875–1961. Swiss psychiatrist and philosopher. Originally a follower of Freud, Jung soon broke with Freud to become the founder of analytic psychology, hypothesizing two major aspects to the unconscious, the personal or individual and the collective. The striving for harmony between the conscious and the unconscious is seen to be an important lifelong task. Jung introduced new concepts such as introvert, extrovert, anima, and animus, and expanded ones that Freud had stressed, such as libido and ego.
