glandula thyroidea
[TA] thyroid gland: an endocrine gland normally situated in the lower part of the front of the neck, consisting of two lobes, one on either side of the trachea and joined in front by a narrow isthmus. It secretes, stores, and liberates the thyroid hormones (thyroxine and triiodothyronine), which require iodine for their elaboration and play major endocrine roles in regulating the metabolic rate. It also secretes thyrocalcitonin. Called also thyroid and thyroid body.
