ciliary beat
the rhythmic, coordinated contraction of cilia of cells in a two-step process involving intraciliary excitation followed by interciliary conduction. The beat may be divided into two parts, the effective stroke and the recovery stroke. The rhythm may be either isochronous (all cilia beating simultaneously) or metachronous (beats moving along the cilia in waves).
