Also known as the DOJ, the Department of Justice is the central agency for the enforcement of federal laws. It was created in 1870 and is headed by the US Attorney General. The DOJ is responsible for investigating and prosecuting violations of federal laws and for representing the United States in all legal matters, including cases before the Supreme Court. The DOJ also enforces all immigration laws and maintains the federal prison system, halfway houses, and community programs.
