A convention on civil jurisdiction and the enforcement of judgments, signed at Brussels in 1968 by the members of the European Economic Community. The UK acceded to the Brussels Convention in 1978 and it became part of UK law under the Civil Jurisdiction and Judgments Act 1982. The Convention unifies to a large extent the private law applicable in the Convention countries over a wide range of civil proceedings. The Lugano Convention applied the same to Poland, Iceland, Norway and Switzerland and was made UK law by the Civil Jurisdiction and Judgments Act 1991. The Brussels Convention has been superceded by EC Regulation No 44/2001 (the Brussels Regulation).
