Mir (emir, amir) was one of the most frequent titles held by the rulers of numerous Kurdish emirates, which existed from the 1300s to the mid-1800s. Although in theory and usually in practice vassals of the Ottoman Empire, these Kurdish emirates sometimes possessed many of the characteristics of an independent state.
