Dohuk is a city of well over 100,000 in the far northwestern, Barzani-controlled corner of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG), some 80 kilometers from the Turkish border crossing used since 1991 for trade between Turkey and the de facto state of Kurdistan in northern Iraq. The city has one of the several universities and medical schools in Iraqi Kurdistan. Dohuk is also the name of the surrounding province, one of three constituting the KRG.
