Pseudoclassicism (gikoten shugi), the imitation of classical literature in modern works, is an offshoot of the classicist emphasis on past art styles and forms. In Japan, the tradition of pseudoclassicism, seen in the overt classical allusions of Heian works by such authors as Ihara Saikaku (1642–93), were resurrected during the Meiji period by Ozaki Koyo, Koda Rohan, and Higuchi Ichiyo.
